PowerPlus Energy Antarctica battery energy storage system supporting scientific research infrastructure

At PowerPlus Energy, we know that some environments leave no room for compromise. That’s why we’re proud to have supplied a battery energy storage solution for a scientific research station in Antarctica, supporting critical infrastructure in one of the harshest operating environments on Earth.

The research station forms part of an international scientific network, with data shared across more than 300 research facilities around the world. In environments where continuous operation is essential, even a brief loss of power can impact sensitive equipment and critical research activities.

To help protect this infrastructure, the system was designed as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), providing reliable backup power to sensitive equipment connected to a mains power source located some distance from the station.

The installation features ten PowerPlus LiFe4833P lithium batteries, delivering dependable energy storage and backup capability in a location where reliability is vital.

Engineering Battery Energy Storage for Antarctica’s Extreme Conditions

Delivering equipment to Antarctica is arguably a separate project. Every stage requires years of planning, with transport by sea and overland carefully coordinated to align with the continent’s limited access window.

Once equipment arrives on site, opportunities for servicing or replacement are extremely limited. This means reliability, quality and system resilience must be considered at every stage of design and delivery.

To ensure the system could withstand these demanding conditions, a thermally insulated and climate-controlled power station was custom built and fully tested in Australia before beginning its journey south. The complete system was engineered to protect critical electrical infrastructure against extreme temperatures and the challenges associated with operating in one of the world’s most isolated environments.
