Why Winter Puts Generators Under More Pressure

Generators earn their keep in winter. As solar production drops and household energy consumption increases, many off-grid and backup power systems become increasingly reliant on generators to maintain battery state of charge and system availability.

The challenge isn’t simply that there is less sunlight. Shorter days, increased cloud cover and higher household energy use all place greater demand on batteries and generators. Systems that perform well through summer can be exposed to very different operating conditions once winter arrives.

During extended periods of poor solar generation, batteries may spend days or even weeks operating below their normal state of charge. While this is often expected, some battery inverters and energy management systems can become confused when batteries are not regularly reaching a full recharge cycle. In some systems, the state of charge (SOC) calculation can gradually drift, resulting in the system believing there is more energy available than there actually is.

Common Generator Problems During Winter

This can create several issues:

  • Generators starting later than expected.
  • Generators failing to start when required.
  • Battery inverters entering low-voltage protection mode before the generator is called.
  • Undersized generators running for excessive periods while attempting to recover battery charge.
  • Reduced overall system reliability during extended periods of poor weather.

A particularly common issue occurs when batteries reach low battery protection before the generator start sequence can be initiated. Once the inverter has shut down to protect the battery, there may no longer be sufficient system control available to automatically start the generator.

For systems with smaller generators, the problem can be compounded further. The generator may eventually start but spend many hours running continuously just to recover the battery bank to a healthy operating level.

Some battery management systems recommend periodically bringing batteries to a full state of charge where possible to help maintain accurate SOC calculations. Generator Health Check Before Winter

Now is the perfect time to perform a generator health check. A routine service can identify issues such as ageing starting batteries, contaminated fuel or blocked filters before they become a problem during extended periods of poor weather.

Before winter conditions become more severe, ensure:

  • The generator has been serviced according to the manufacturer’s schedule.
  • Engine oil and filters are current.
  • Fuel is fresh and uncontaminated.
  • Fuel tanks are full.
  • Starting batteries are healthy.
  • Automatic start functionality has been tested.
  • Any fault alarms have been investigated.
  • The generator can comfortably support the required charging load.

Remember, generators are often the last line of defence when solar production is low. Discovering a maintenance issue during a prolonged period of bad weather is never ideal.

Generators in winter help alleviate off-grid and backup power systems. A well-maintained generator helps ensure batteries remain charged, backup systems stay operational and customers avoid unnecessary outages when solar production is at its lowest. Spending a little time on generator maintenance before winter can prevent much bigger problems when reliable power matters most.
