Off-Grid and On a Mission: Powering Derby Native Wildlife’s Journey

Overview

Established in 2018, Derby Native Wildlife is a dedicated sanctuary in Western Australia’s Kimberley region, providing care and rehabilitation for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife. Founded by passionate carers Heidi and Ray Sampey, the sanctuary is the result of years of dedication, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to giving Australia’s native animals a second chance at life.

In August 2018, Heidi and Ray purchased a special rural block on the outskirts of Derby, a remote, quiet area of natural bushland with no buildings and no connection to the grid. Their original vision was simple: a peaceful off-grid retreat where they could enjoy the serenity of the Kimberley and ease into semi-retirement. A transportable house was brought onto the site, and Remote Solar Solutions designed and installed an off-grid solar system to suit their needs at the time.

However, plans quickly evolved.

From Quiet Retreat to Wildlife Sanctuary

Heidi began spending her spare time caring for orphaned wildlife, while Ray worked in town and devoted his free hours to developing the property, installing solar bores, sprinkler systems, pouch rooms, and animal pens. As word spread, more sick, injured, and orphaned animals began arriving, and the need for additional infrastructure and power grew rapidly.

Heidi soon became a licensed wildlife carer through the Department of Parks and Wildlife, and Derby Native Wildlife was formally created. What began as a small off-grid residence transformed into a fully functioning wildlife sanctuary. Facilities expanded to include a medical examination room, dedicated joey rooms, and large outdoor enclosures tailored to different species.

Today, the sanctuary primarily cares for wallaby and kangaroo joeys, but it also regularly shelters possums, birds, bats and even the occasional crocodile. Enclosures are carefully designed to mimic natural habitats, with man-made billabong watering holes, rock mounds, sandy shaded areas, and native vegetation to prepare animals for eventual release back into the wild.

An Evolving Solar System

From the very beginning, reliable power was critical not just for daily living, but for the survival of vulnerable wildlife in the harsh Kimberley climate. The original off-grid system consisted of:

  • 36x 270W Trina Solar panels (9.7kW)
  • 3x Victron Blue Solar MPPT 150/70-Tr charge controllers
  • Flooded Magnum batteries in a 48V / 1320Ah configuration (maximum 38kWh usable at 60% DOD)
  • 2x Victron Multiplus 48/5000/70 inverter-chargers (single phase, parallel)
  • ABLE 9.0kVA generator

As the sanctuary expanded, so did daytime and overnight energy demands. Increased loads affected battery charging, leading to longer generator run times and rising fuel costs, a serious concern given the reliance on sensitive medical and refrigeration equipment.

To assist with charging capacity and load handling, an AC-coupled inverter system was added:

  • Fronius Primo 4.0-1 inverter
  • 18 × 310W Trina Solar panels (5.6kW)

Despite these upgrades, continued growth, particularly overnight consumption meant further improvements were needed.

Powering the Future with Lithium Storage

Remote Solar Solutions partnered with PowerPlus Energy to reassess, redesign, and future-proof the system. The latest upgrade introduced modular lithium battery storage, allowing the system to grow alongside the sanctuary.

Key reasons for selecting PowerPlus Energy included:

  • Self-managed batteries not dependent on a common BMS
  • Australian-made manufacturing and support
  • Modular design suited to ongoing expansion

The most recent upgrade included:

  • 15x PowerPlus Eco4840P lithium batteries (60kWh)
  • 16x 370W Trina Solar panels (5.9kW)
  • 1x Victron RS450/100 MPPT charge controller

With these additions, the site now operates with a total solar capacity of 21.2kW, delivering reliable power for solar pumps in billabongs, food chillers and freezers, climate-controlled joey rooms, and essential air-conditioning during extreme heat.

This is not a “new” system, but one that has steadily evolved from humble beginnings, continually adapting to keep pace with the expanding needs of Derby Native Wildlife.

Powering Possibilities Where It Matters Most

In remote areas like Derby, wildlife rescue is both essential and challenging. During extreme heatwaves, animals can suffer terribly, without dedicated carers and reliable infrastructure, many would not survive.

PowerPlus Energy is proud to power Derby Native Wildlife and the extraordinary work of Heidi and Ray. Their sanctuary stands as a testament to what passion, perseverance, and the right technology can achieve.

By keeping the lights on and the power flowing they are helping ensure that Australia’s native wildlife is given the care, dignity, and second chance they deserve.
