From Outdated Solar to Energy Independence: Energy Wired Seaford Installation

Project Snapshot

  • Installer: Energy Wired
  • Location: Seaford, Melbourne, Victoria
  • System Size:8kW Solar + 13.4kWh Whispr Battery
  • Battery: Whispr by PowerPlus Energy
  • Brands Integrated: PowerPlus Energy, Trina
  • Objective: Solar Upgrade, grid resilience, long-term reliability

Introduction

With over 14 years in the solar and battery industry, Cliff from Energy Wired has seen technology evolve rapidly, from early low-capacity systems to today’s intelligent, high-output hybrid platforms.

When he was approached to upgrade Andres’ outdated 2kW solar system at his home in Seaford, Melbourne, the goal was clear: design a future-ready system that delivers energy security, reliability, and long-term value. Electricity prices are rising, grid stability is a growing concern, and like many Victorian households, energy usage has evolved beyond what early solar systems were designed to handle.

This installation also marked Cliff’s first experience installing the Whispr battery, a product he approached with high expectations, having previously worked with PowerPlus Energy systems on larger-scale resilience projects.

The Challenge: A Home Ready for an Upgrade

Andres’ existing 2kW solar array was built with what is now considered outdated technology that no longer provides meaningful savings, despite still capturing sunlight. With significant advancements in solar innovation, an upgrade was necessary. The key requirements for the upgrade included:

  • Substantial increase in solar capacity
  • Battery storage for backup during grid outages
  • A system capable of handling multiple roof orientations

The Solution

Energy Wired upgraded the home with an 8.8kW solar system composed of 20 x 440W Trina double-glass panels, each fitted with optimisers to manage shading and maximise performance across multiple roof aspects. The system was designed to deliver strong year-round generation, maintaining output through both high-producing summers and cloudier winter periods.

Paired with the solar array was the 13.4kWh Whispr all-in-one home battery, capable of delivering 7kW of continuous power both on-grid and during outages. With three MPPT trackers (ideal for complex roof layouts), integrated backup functionality, and a 40A pass-through for simplified installation and voltage management, the Whispr provided both technical flexibility and long-term reliability. Sized intentionally for resilience, it supports simultaneous household load and battery charging while delivering dependable blackout protection, giving the homeowner greater energy security and independence.

One standout feature Cliff highlighted was that the Whispr could discharge at the full 7kW to power the home while simultaneously charging at up to 2kW directly from solar. This meant that even during periods of high demand, for example, when air conditioning and household appliances were running, excess solar energy could still replenish the battery instead of being sent back to the grid.

For homeowners, this translated to greater energy autonomy, reduced reliance on the grid, and stronger performance during emergency scenarios when dependable backup power mattered most. As Cliff described it light-heartedly: “He’s basically Armageddon-proof!”

New products usually cost us hours in commissioning. That wasn’t the case here. It was very straightforward”

Installation Experience: First Impressions of the Whispr

For an installer, ease of installation is more than just a convenience, it directly impacts business sustainability. Time spent returning to site for troubleshooting or extended commissioning is one of the biggest hidden costs in the industry. That’s why first impressions matter.

Reflecting on his first Whispr installation in Seaford, Cliff described the process as intuitive from start to finish. The clean, stackable design made positioning simple, while the access layout kept wiring tidy and professional. Commissioning was straightforward, which is a rare outcome when working with new products. “New products usually cost us hours in commissioning. That wasn’t the case here. It was very straightforward,” Cliff said.

Compared to competitors in the same price range, he placed the Whispr in the top 10% for ease of installation, noting that its 7kW output also gave it a clear performance edge over many common 5–6kW systems on the market.

Proven in Emergency Infrastructure; Why Energy Wired Selected the Whispr

Energy Wired’s confidence in PowerPlus Energy products wasn’t built overnight. Over the past 14 years, Cliff has deployed PowerPlus Energy systems across demanding applications, including off-grid installations, community emergency hubs, and fire-prone resilience zones, environments where reliability isn’t optional.

For Cliff, product selection isn’t driven by price, it’s driven by long-term performance, and ongoing support. Having worked with PowerPlus Energy across larger-scale and critical infrastructure projects, he trusted the Whispr to deliver the same level of reliability in this residential installation.

Built for the Next Decade

As home battery demands rise alongside evolving rebate programs across Victoria, Cliff encourages homeowners to focus on long-term value rather than short-term discounts. “These systems are in for ten years or more. You need to choose the right partner,” he explained, which is why he recommends PowerPlus Energy.

The Seaford installation demonstrates what modern residential energy independence could look like: a well-sized 8.8kW solar array intelligently optimised across multiple roof aspects, paired with 13.4kWh of reliable storage delivering 7kW continuous output, simultaneous charging and discharging capability, and integrated blackout protection.

More than a home battery installation, this project marked a shift from simple solar savings to genuine household resilience. For homeowners upgrading from earlier solar systems, the Whispr is not just a product, but a system built for energy independence.
