From July 1st the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Battery Program will provide a ~30% discount on the upfront cost of installing eligible small-scale battery systems with the discount based on the battery’s usable capacity.
Rebates will be issued to installers through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) via Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). In the program’s first year, the rebate will be approximately $372 per kWh, gradually decreasing to $188 per kWh over the six-year duration until 2030.

Can I install on-grid and off-grid?
Systems can be installed either on-grid or off-grid. On-grid installations must be VPP capable.
Sizing Limitations
The program allows a maximum system size of 100kWh, with up to 50kWh eligible for the rebate.
Does it Support C&I installation?
At present, government guidelines do not differentiate between residential and C&I installations; however, this may change in the future.
System Eligibility
An eligible battery system and the inverter must be listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list.
Installer Qualification
Battery must be installed by an installer accredited for battery installations by Solar Accreditation Australia.
How quickly will payments be made?
The Clean Energy Regulator has not yet confirmed the expected timeframe for rebate payments to installers under the program.
Can I upgrade an existing system?
Existing systems can be upgraded with new, rebate-eligible capacity; however, commissioning cannot occur before July 1st. Adding capacity to a system that has already received a rebate is not eligible for additional discounts.
Is the rebate restricted to households only?
While the scheme mainly targets households, small businesses and community groups—such as cafes and soccer clubs—with existing or new solar systems can also get upfront discounts on battery systems up to 50 kWh.
Is solar required?
Batteries must be connected to an existing or new solar system that is eligible under the small-scale scheme.
