When choosing an energy storage system, one of the early decisions you’ll face is whether to select a self-managed or a managed solution. Each approach offers unique benefits depending on the application, system design, and user preference.
At PowerPlus Energy, we offer both self-managed and managed solutions, supported by our in-house engineering team and trusted technical partners. This allows us to gain valuable insights into which option is best suited to different environments. Whether you’re building a modular off-grid system or designing a hybrid home setup, knowing the key differences can help you make the right choice.
Self-Managed Batteries
Self-managed batteries come with their own internal Battery Management System (BMS), meaning each battery module monitors its own health, performs charging and discharging independently. These systems are modular, so if one battery has an issue, the system can continue operating with one less battery until it is swapped out. For many installers and end users, this decentralised approach offers simplicity and flexibility particularly in remote or scalable setups.
Managed Batteries
Managed systems operate with a centralised BMU (Battery management unit) that communicates directly with the inverter. This system allows the battery to be optimised for the inverter charging and discharging abilities in real time, based on factors like energy demand, solar availability and grid pricing. It’s a more coordinated setup that can offer improved system visibility.
Both managed and self-managed batteries offer benefits, and system integrators typically select which one to use based off specific use case and situation requirements.
At PowerPlus Energy, we support both approaches because we know there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.
The Eco4847P is our most popular battery. A 4.7kWh LFP, rack-mounted battery intentionally designed for the ultimate in reliability in harsh, remote environments. If a battery module fails, the system keeps running, and the faulty unit can be ‘hot swapped’ without any downtime. It’s modular, infinitely scalable, and built for applications where flexibility is important. As each battery operates independently, it’s a reliable choice for off-grid systems, remote sites, or projects where resilience is a priority. What’s more is it is Australian made in our Melbourne facility, to the high-quality Australian power users expect.
The Whispr is an all-in-one integrated battery energy storage system (BESS) that includes managed batteries and a smart-hybrid inverter. Being a managed solution, it handles energy decisions automatically as one unit. It charges when solar is available and discharges when needed and responds to the grid conditions in real time. It’s designed to reduce complexity and streamline installation, particularly for grid connect homes.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to choosing between self-managed and managed systems, it really depends on your specific requirements. The right choice will come down to how much flexibility, control, or integration your setup needs. Self-managed systems like the Eco4847P offer a modular, scalable approach with greater independence. Managed systems like the Whispr provide a streamlined, all-in-one solution with built-in intelligence for ease of use.
When deciding, consider:
One aspect that’s often overlooked when selecting a system is the level of after-sales support you can expect. Energy storage is a long-term investment, and the brand you choose should be one that’s committed to supporting you well beyond installation. At PowerPlus Energy, that commitment is built into everything we do. No matter which product you choose, you’ll receive the same high level of care and support because we’re here to go the distance with you.
If you’re still weighing up the options, simply contact us, our team is always happy to talk through the pros and cons in more detail.
